Photochromic Adaptive Shields not only eliminate the need to carry multiple shields, but can actually improve vision by seamlessly adjusting to the optimal darkness level as light changes. 2. Photochromic shields work by activating the molecules that darken the shield with the UV rays in sunlight. Because UV rays can penetrate clouds, photochromic shields can darken even on cloudy days. Direct sunlight is not required. 3. How do they darken? Photochromic shields darken faster than they lighten, and the speed is known to be slightly temperature-dependent. However, on a truly bright, sunny day, they typically reach their maximum darkness in about 20 seconds. 4. Photochromic performance is affected by temperature, UV exposure, and riding position. Photochromic shields darken in sunlight and become clear (or nearly clear) again indoors. This is due to a chemical reaction that responds to the presence or absence of UV light. Photochromic shields darken faster than they lighten, and the speed is known to vary slightly depending on temperature. On a bright, sunny day, they typically reach full density in about 20 seconds.
