Giraffes are long-necked, hoofed mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa, grazing in the open forests.
Giraffes are the tallest living land animals, yet in height they are most closely related to the much smaller, solitary okapi, which inhabits dense tropical forests.
Nine subspecies of giraffe are recognized, representing different geographic locations and varying slightly in color and pattern of their spot-like markings.
