"Kōken Chiai" (交剣智愛) refers to the samurai era, when a duel with a drawn sword continued until one of the participants fell. A slight misstep could have meant defeat for oneself. This realization fostered a sense of connection with the opponent, a feeling of regret expressed as "love." In modern times, it means striving for personal growth and mutual understanding through kendo. It's a kendo proverb encouraging practice and matches that leave the other participant wanting to practice again. Reading it before putting on your mask will instill a spirit of Kōken Chiai in your training. It's also a great conversation starter before and after practice. Perfect as a souvenir for training sessions or a gift for visiting dojos. Framing it and displaying it is also recommended.
