In 1983, [Casio] released the shock-resistant G-SHOCK. This product shattered the notion that watches were delicate jewelry requiring careful handling, and was the result of [Casio] engineers challenging themselves to create the world’s toughest watch. It adopted a triple-protection design for parts, modules, and cases, providing a groundbreaking new type of wristwatch unaffected by strong shocks or vibrations. Its practicality was quickly recognized, and its unique appearance embodying that functionality gained immense popularity, leading to explosive sales in the early 1990s. G-SHOCK soon incorporated a variety of new sensors, solar radio-controlled technology (described below), and new materials to further enhance its durability. By consistently utilizing the latest technology and continuing to transcend conventional ideas about watches, the G-SHOCK brand became [Casio]’s flagship watch product.
