The legendary indie pop band from Scotland, Camera Obscura, led by Tracyanne Campbell, releases their album 'Look to the East, Look to the West' from Merge Records. This album is one of the most challenging works in Camera Obscura's career. After the passing of their original keyboardist and friend Carey Lander in 2015, the band entered a long hiatus. Although they kept in touch, the situation remained uncertain until they were invited to Belle & Sebastian's 2019 Boaty Weekender and announced their return alongside sold-out warm-up live shows in Glasgow. Recorded in the same room where Queen wrote "Bohemian Rhapsody," 'Look to the East, Look to the West' is a grand work that reconstructs Camera Obscura's sound in widescreen. Paradoxically, the band returned to basics. There are no string or brass arrangements, with piano, synthesizers, Hammond organ, and drum machines being more emphasized. Perhaps most striking is the removal of the reverb veil that characterized their previous work.
