Iwate was the final ship of the armored cruisers built under the Six-Six Fleet Plan, and was completed on March 18, 1901, at the Armstrong Elsick Works, the same facility as her sister ship, Izumo. During the Russo-Japanese War, she served as the flagship of the commander of the 2nd Squadron, which consisted of six armored cruisers. In the Battle of Ulsan on August 14, 1904, she annihilated the Vladivostok Fleet, despite suffering the greatest losses of the 2nd Squadron, with over 70 casualties. The following year, in the Battle of Tsushima, she and her battleships launched a fierce attack on the Baltic Fleet, contributing to the overwhelming victory of the Japanese fleet.
