BMW regained its brilliance in the racing scene in the 1960s with the emergence of the compact two-door sedan, the 02 series. Its successors were the 3.0 CSL, the subject of this article, and its successor, the 320. The 3.0 CSL competed in the ETC (European Touring Car Championship) from 1969. By replacing some of the vehicle's materials from iron to aluminum, a weight reduction of 200 kg was achieved. The car's dominance was overwhelming, reigning as champion in the ETC for seven years from 1973 to 1979, and achieving class victories at the Sebring 12 Hours (1975), Daytona 24 Hours (1976), and even the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1973, 1974, and 1977. The 320 Group 5, on the other hand, was a machine built for Group 5 racing, which was a popular category second only to Formula 1 at the time. It was a silhouette formula car that was modified to the point where it could be considered a completely different car, except for the roof shape, front mask, and taillights that retained some of the features of the base car. It was equipped with a 2-liter engine from Formula 2 and achieved great success, winning the World Championship in 1977 and 1978. The 320 Group 5 is now available as a new mold!
